Video: Art in the Everglades!
The Wetlands Project
The majestic splendor of the Big Cypress and Everglades, stunningly captured by Miami Beach artist Deborah M. Mitchell will be displayed as Documenting Our Contemporary Wetlands, a mixed media exploration comprised of 20 black and white photographs embellished with stamped insights and objects found in the Big Cypress and Everglades wilderness. The exhibit, free and open to the public, will run from Wednesday, May 5 through Monday, June 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The Museum of the Everglades, 105 W. Broadway, Everglades City, Florida. The Wetlands Project, her community outreach initiative in which the public was invited to included their view on the state of our wetlands, will also be displayed.
In addition, Mitchell will be discussing how she conceived Documenting Our Contemporary Wetlands as the featured artist in the museum’s “Artist of the Month” program. The informal talk will be held on Saturday, May 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Museum of the Everglades. The event is free and open to the public.
Documenting Our Contemporary Wetlands is Mitchell’s follow up project to 2007’s critically-acclaimed Visions of Big Cypress, a collection of photographs and mixed media works showcasing the flora and fauna that define the Big Cypress. Says Timothy England, curator at the Museum of the Everglades, “Deborah’s art is powerful and relevant because it intelligently depicts the fragility of the environment in which we live and work. Her unique perspective displayed in both photographic, text, and 3D material, adds a new layer to ones viewing experience. This enhanced experience encourages the viewer to take the environment more seriously while enhancing their appreciation of this majestic preserve.”
Documenting Our
Contemporary Wetlands is made possible in part by The New York
Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), a non-profit organization which provides
assistance to artists that contribute to the dialogue of our time. For
