DEBORAH M. MITCHELL’S DOCUMENTING OUR CONTEMPORARY WETLANDS
A Mixed Media Exhibit to Raise Awareness on Everglades Preservation sponsored in part by the New York Foundation for the Arts
The mysterious splendor of the Big Cypress National Preserve and the Everglades will be on display at the Museum of the Everglades as a mixed media exploration comprised of 20 black and white photographs embellished with stamped insights and objects found in the wilderness. The exhibit, free and open to the public, runs from Tuesday, May 4th through Monday, June 28th, from 9am-4pm located at 105 W. Broadway, Everglades City, Florida, 239.695.0008. The Wetlands Project, a community outreach initiative in which the public was invited to include their views on the state of our wetlands, will also be displayed.
The Museum of the Everglades will host an informal artists’ talk about how the project was conceived at 1pm on Saturday, May 8th. Timothy England, curator at the museum, says “Deborah’s art is powerful and relevant because it intelligently depicts the fragility of the environment in which we live and work. Her unique perspective displayed in both photographic, text, and 3D material encourages the viewer to take the environment more seriously while enhancing their appreciation for this majestic preserve.”
Additionally, this exhibit will run from Wednesday, July 14 through Friday, July 23 from 9-5pm at The Montauk Library, 871 Montauk Highway in Montauk, New York, 631.668.3377. Ms. Mitchell will be discussing the exhibit at the library in New York on Sunday, July 18th at 4pm.

Dear friends,
As many of you already know, my current project was awarded fiscal sponsorship in November 2009 from the New York Foundation for the Arts. To reach out and keep you up to date on the project details, I am outlining how this educational and inspiring exhibition can proceed as intended. DOCUMENTING OUR CONTEMPORARY WETLANDS, a traveling exhibit in which the public experiences a visual journey of the culturally significant wetlands of South Florida, is one of more than 400 independent artists’ projects and 60 emerging arts organizations that contribute to the artistic dialogue of our time. NYFA was founded in 1971 to work with the arts community throughout the United States of America to develop and facilitate projects in all disciplines.
However, time and resources are necessary for the creative mind and artistic spirit to flourish. NYFA’s fiscal sponsorship Program supports such projects through financial and technical services which allow donations to be utilized to the fullest potential. Your contribution to DOCUMENTING OUR CONTEMPORARY WETLANDS will make it possible to continue to move from inspiration to the realization of my artistic endeavor. A donation of $200.00 can pay the discounted cost of my average frame, or two enlargements from the lab. The generous donation of $1,800.00 will cover the cost of a color catalogue available to everyone attending the free artists’ talks during the exhibits at the Museum of the Everglades and The Montauk Library (and a Miami location TBA in the next update.) Shipping costs to and from New York can be covered with a $700.00 contribution.
Any donation is gratefully accepted, but those over $250.00 are fully tax deductible to the extent of the federal law. No goods or services are provided in exchange for this contribution. Checks should be made payable to NYFA of the New York Foundation for the Arts, mailed to 20 Jay Street, suite 740, Brooklyn, NY, 11201.
